Tom Allen’s
Twelve Core
Values for the Church
-
SCRIPTURAL
PREEMINENCE
I believe that the Bible is the ultimate authority for my preaching
and personal conduct, and for the vision and governance of the
church
-
FULL SURRENDER
I believe that full devotion to Christ and His cause is normal for
every believer and that we should faithfully encourage radical
dedication to Jesus
-
PASSIONATE
EVANGELISM
I believe that lost people are God’s primary concern, and therefore
they should be our top priority, too; the “Main Thing” for every
believer and every church should be the Great Commandment and the
Great Commission of Jesus Christ
-
CULTURAL
RELEVANCY
I believe it is both possible and imperative to be culturally
relevant while maintaining doctrinal purity
-
MAXIMUM IMPACT
I believe that everything we do as a church should be done with a
view to impact the greatest number of people for the Kingdom of
Christ, and that we should be willing to trade familiarity for a
larger influence
-
ANTICIPATED
GROWTH
I believe the church was born to grow and that as we are faithful to
God’s Word, we should both expect and plan for growth
-
MISSION
OWNERSHIP
I believe that every church should know precisely why they
exist and
promote that mission with such clarity and energy that every member
and adherent will want to own it
-
TEAM ORIENTATION
I believe that the church functions best when it embraces a team
philosophy and encourages all of its members and adherents to
demonstrate servanthood through gift-based ministry
-
AGGRESSIVE
PROMOTION
I believe that every church should have a ministry worth
advertising, and then utilize every legitimate form of media to let
people know why we are here and how we can help them
-
AUTHENTIC
COMMUNITY
I believe it is important for every church to find ways to divide
into smaller communities of believers where deeper fellowship and
intimacy can be fostered
-
MINISTRY
EXCELLENCE
I believe that excellence honors God and inspires people, and that
the church should put forth its best effort in each endeavor for the
glory of God
-
PRAYER PRIORITY
I
believe the spiritual health of the individual believer and the
church is directly proportional to the depth of our personal and
corporate praying; “in everything by prayer and supplication.
. .”
Spiritual
Gifts and Ministry Skills
Spiritual
Gifts:
-
The gift of
prophecy-- this is not a reference to “FOREtelling the
future” (I Cor. 13:2) but rather a special ability to “FORTHtell
the Word of God with boldness” (Romans 12:6 and I Cor. 14:4,5); in
its simplest form, it’s known as “the gift of preaching.” This has
been confirmed by the body of Christ since I was 13 years old
speaking to Junior Church, and then by both my district (Central
District) leadership in Ohio, and later by the Board of Managers of
the C&MA who appointed me to be a National Minister of Outreach
-
The gift of
teaching--this is the supernatural ability to communicate
information (I Cor. 12:28); it is closely related to the gift of
preaching, but distinct in this way: whereas teaching “instructs,”
preaching “insists;” preaching carries with it the added element of
persuasion
-
The gift of
discernment--this is a special ability to quickly read a
situation and determine the best course of action (I Cor. 12:10);
this gift has been confirmed over and over in situations with
pastors who needed advice for dealing with a crisis in their lives
or ministries; I believe God gave me this gift to assist His
servants during my itinerant ministry
-
The gift of
administration--this is the supernatural ability to
organize, plan, and lead others to work together in the
accomplishment of ministry objectives (I Cor. 12:28); this gift was
first discovered as a pastor and then confirmed at the National
office of the C&MA when I was Director of Evangelism for the
denomination.
Ministry Skills:
-
Writing--I
have had 9 non-fiction books published. I love working with words, and this is helpful when writing important documents like mission
statements, vision statements, core values, etc.
-
Drama--My
major at Asbury College was Speech Communications, and along with
that I took several Drama classes; I really enjoy writing for,
acting in, and directing dramatic productions, and I think this can
be used for God’s glory to make powerful points
-
Humor--God
has given me a good sense of humor, and I believe in the use of
humor to not only make people relax but also to set them up for deep
truths--just when people are laughing the loudest, you can slip in a
potent word from the Lord that will really stick with the audience
